WATERWAYS – Marine waterways as a sustainable source of wellbeing, security, and safety
How can the sustainable use of maritime routes be developed and maintained in a constantly changing world amidst evolving risk landscapes, regulatory frameworks, and shifting societal values?
The WATERWAYS project aims to enhance the sustainable positive effects of maritime routes on well-being, safety, and security within the northern Baltic Sea. By leveraging cutting-edge data analytics and AI methodologies for comprehensive monitoring and evaluation, the initiative explores ecological, social, technological, and legal dimensions. This multifaceted approach facilitates the development of advanced tools and insights that underpin strategic planning and informed decision-making in maritime governance.

The project is part of the Water for Welfare, Security, and Peace (WAWE) program, funded by the Finnish Strategic Research Council from 2024 to 2030. The projects within the program are developing sustainable and just science-based solutions for the management of water resources and the marine environment, and for strengthening water safety and security.

The WATERWAYS consortium consists of research teams from Aalto University, Finnish Meteorological Institute, Kotka Maritime Research Centre (Merikotka), University of Helsinki, and Åbo Akademi University.
